Article Writing Tips - Don't Be Afraid to Stir the Pot

I have to chuckle at some of the articles I read. Actually, I'm chuckling more at the people who write these articles. It seems that today, everybody has to be so politically correct. Heaven forbid you say anything that might even be the least bit controversial. And even worse than that, don't inject any real emotion in your articles. Just present the facts and that'll be good enough. Well, news flash...that ain't gonna cut it. If you want to keep your readers reading, you better be prepared to give them something that actually gets their attention and keeps it. I'll give you a few tips to do just that.

One way is to get your reader engaged. How? Well, for starters, how about asking some questions? When you present an argument to your reader, ask him what he thinks. Put some questions out there. He may not answer you directly but he'll be answering these questions, at the very least, to himself. This will keep him interested in the subject, thinking that there may be other questions coming. Doesn't this make sense to you? Are YOU wondering what I may ask you in this article?

Another way to get your reader engaged is to bring some controversy into the subject. Not everything has to be so watered down that the article reads like the dictionary. It's okay to have an opinion that might be a little controversial. For example, I think articles should be able to name names if there are those out there who are taking advantage of the consumer public. But in our politically correct society and with everybody afraid of lawsuits, we just don't do these things. Well, one day, I may just blow the whistle on quite a few slime balls. So stay tuned.

Finally, a great way to get your reader engaged is to present both sides of an argument and let the reader decide which side of the fence he falls on. If you write an article from just one perspective, you're not giving the reader a chance to really examine the issue in depth. By presenting both sides, regardless of whether or not you agree with one side, you give your reader a full picture.

Bottom line is this. Vanilla is a nice flavor, but every once in a while we like chocolate fudge or some rocky road. So don't be afraid to stir the pot. It just might make your articles a lot more interesting to read.
